COUNSELING SERVICES

The University Counseling Center is excited to welcome you as students of the University of Maryland at College Park. We seek to provide support services to all students and are particularly interested in facilitating your transition to the University. As such, we offer many services that may be of particular assistance for a smoother matriculation into college life.

The University Counseling Center is housed in the Shoemaker Building located on the south side of campus and is comprised of five divisions that could be of assistance to you. The majority of the services at the University Counseling Center are free for registered students. First is the Counseling Service (301.314.7651), which provides free time-limited psychological therapy to help with a wide range of concerns. Some notable issues for veterans may be social adjustment to college and civilian life, choosing a major, depression, anxiety, and acute or chronic stress.  The second division is the Learning Assistance Service (301.314.7693), which can assist with the necessary learning skills to help your academic transition. We hold workshops and offer individual skill-based learning in areas such as time management, study skills, math tutoring, exam taking strategies, and more. Third is the Parent Consultation and Child Evaluation Service (301.314.7673). This service was established to provide counseling and mental heath services for children of students and employees. Our psychologist is also available to consult with you as parents regarding your child. Fourth, our Disability Support Service (301.314.7682) can assist with providing accommodations for documented physical and/or psychological disabilities to better ensure your academic success. Common accommodations include extended time on tests or taking your test in a quiet environment. Lastly, our Testing & Research division is a testing site for many of the nationally and locally coordinated qualifying exams. We provide testing for graduate school entrance or professional exams, such as the GRE, LSAT, PRAXIS, and others.
