The University of Maryland is dedicated to supporting educational opportunities for veterans and service members. The University of Maryland Veterans Initiative Scholarships will provide support for veteran students to have the opportunity to pursue educational goals. They are intended to cover direct study-related expenses such as tuition, fees, books, and room and board.
The University of Maryland College Park Veterans Initiative Scholarships provide financial assistance to students who are veterans of US military service, who have demonstrated financial need, and have shown career ambitions and/or a demonstration of service to others in the community.
- Alexion Veterans Scholarship was established by Perry and Rachelle Alexion; there is one scholarship for $1000.
- Paul E. and Jane F. Butler Scholarship was established by Terrance Butler and Nancy Morris Butler in honor of Terrance’s parents. The scholarship is ONLY open to qualified students of the Robert H. Smith School of Business; there is one scholarship for $1000.
- Robert E. Evasick Memorial Scholarship was established by Paul and Charlotte Evasick in memory of Robert E. Evasick; there is one scholarship for $1000.
- Ernest M. Willcher Veterans Scholarship was established in loving memory by his wife Shirley and sons Ben and Joel to support veteran students at the University of Maryland College Park; there are currently two scholarships for $1000 each.
- University of Maryland Veterans Scholarship is supported by alumni and friends of the University of Maryland; there is one scholarship for $1000.
Who is eligible to apply for the scholarships?
Veterans and reservists who:
- Wish to start, finish, or further their education at the University of Maryland.
- Have served in active duty or reserve capacity for any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or National Guard.
- Have exhausted all government benefits or cannot meet total need while utilizing all government benefits.
- Are registered full- or part-time at UM and are pursuing undergraduate, graduate or post-graduate degrees.
What criteria will be considered for awarding a University of Maryland Veterans scholarship?
- Demonstration of service to others in the community and a desire to continue such service
- Compelling, thoughtful, genuine, and thorough essay question responses
- Unmet financial need
- Educational and career ambitions
- Record of personal achievement

Fund for Veterans Education
Fund unveils scholarships for veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan: The New-York based Fund for Veterans Education announced it would award up to $1 million in undergraduate scholarships for veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan and during the spring 2008 term. The awards, which may be renewed for following academic year, are intended to cover financial need not met by need-based grants and military education benefits. Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV)
Building on an innovative program created in 2007 by Syracuase University to expand the reach of educational programs in entrepreneurship available to veterans, the Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University will lead a nationwide partnership with UCLA Anderson School of Management, Mays Business School at Texas A&M University and Florida State University's College of Business to offer cutting-edge training in entrepreneurship and small business management to veterans with disabilities. This consortium represents one of the first, significant partnerships since WWWII among some of the country's most prestigious business schools focused specifically on opening the doors of America's colleges and universities to veterans motivated by business ownership.
The consortium is an extension of SU's Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV) program, first offered in summer 2007 at SU, which enrolled 20 veterans with disabilities. The EBV integrates world-class faculty, entrepreneurs, disability experts and business professionals in an educational program focused on training veterans in the competencies associated with small business ownership. Tillman Foundation.
The Division of Student Affairs is seeking qualified applicants for the Tillman Military Scholarship at the University of Maryland. The scholarships are sponsored by the Pat Tillman Foundation "Leadership Through ActionTM" initiative, which is dedicated to supporting educational opportunities for service members and their families. Veteran and active service members and their dependents (children and spouses) portray the very nature of leadership that the Foundation seeks to inspire in young people across the country. The scholarships will ensure these leaders have every opportunity to pursue broader educational goals. Women in the Military
The Alliance for National Defense (AND), will award two $2500 scholarships to current and future military women in 2009.
The alliance is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization providing powerful advocacy and a positive voice for military women. AND encourages and promotes the vital role of military women and men in our nation's defense. AND directors, national council members and supporters include active duty military personnel and concerned veterans working alongside civilians interested in military issues to provide factual, thoughtful, objective information on military personnel issues to policymakers, legislators and the public.
Honoring Brigadier General Evelyn P. Foote, USA, Ret., the Foote Scholarship is reserved for a currently serving enlisted woman who is enrolled for at least six credit hours at an accredited college or university; the Sadler Scholarship, named for Captain Georgia Sadler, USN, Ret., is intended for a woman enrolled in her second year in an accredited ROTC program.
Scholarship winners will be chosen from among applicants representing any branch or component of the armed forces based on merit, academic potential, community service and need. Winners will be announced in July 2009.
